It’s Your Neighborhood and Your Bakery
The Firehook Name
Researchers have concluded that the bakery oven dates back to more than 7800 years ago. The oldest bakery ovens found date back to about 5700 B.C. in Asia Minor. Around 3000 B.C., or 5000 years ago, the Egyptians had bakeries and bakers. According to ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, the baker was known as the “Fire Hook.” The name came from the tool used to pull the pots filled with baked breads out of the oven. Bread was not the only product of these ancient bakeries. Researchers have concluded that around 1200 B.C., the old “Fire Hooks” produced as many as 40 different types of breads and cakes.
Firehook Bakery & Coffeehouse
Washington’s Firehook Bakery & Coffeehouse was established in December 1992 with one simple goal: quality. Since then, Firehook has been offering customers the best and most authentic bakery goods and coffee in their neighborhood.
Some of Firehook’s older customers will no doubt remember the first store, on Lee Street, one block up from the Old Town waterfront. And anyone who visited that store will recall the imposing wood-burning oven, which was brought from Spain by ship and built brick by brick.
To keep up with growing demand, we moved to a larger building on Fayette Street in Old Town Alexandria in 1998. This new building offers more efficient space, larger refrigeration capabilities, and new equipment, including a new bread oven. In May 2001, Brian P. Murphy, a native Washingtonian and loyal customer coined the phrase “Washington Born, Washington Bread” to describe Firehook.
“Never fall out with your bread and butter.”
